My name is Deborah Anderson and I live in Northern California with my husband of 25 years, John. Our son, Trevor, is living and
working nearby in Napa, CA.
I was born in the UK and immigrated to the USA with my parents in 1958. Horses have always been my passion since
childhood. My Grandfather was an equestrian and Arabian Horse Breeder. The Love of Equines is in my DNA. After graduating from High School in 1974, I spent a year at Crabbet Park Equitation Centre in Worth, West Sussex. I wanted to experience
equestrianism abroad so I could go back to the USA richer in knowledge and skills.
One of the most interesting and most difficult aspects of horsemanship is learning to understand our horses and relate
to them on horse terms. It always fascinates me that people consider themselves superior to animals and yet expect animals to learn
our language rather than the other way around. Horses and dogs both learn to respond to complicated human demands but people often
misinterpret basic horse and dog communication.
Trust between people or between people and animals is built on a history of positive interaction. In order to trust someone,
we have to believe they will respond consistently and appropriately in a given situation and that they will follow through with
what they say. The same goes for horses. To build trust, we must respond appropriately and consistently to their behavior or
anticipated behavior and once started on a course of action, follow through.
Because people are verbal, we tend to dismiss other forms of communication. Horses don't use words. They don't even use sounds to any
great extent. If you study and watch horses as they interact with one another and with people...their ears, eyes, muzzles, tails and body
posture are all communicating. The Equine language is understood by so few and many humans misunderstand or do not even know how to interperate.
Having this valuable skill/gift has allowed me to enter and succeed in the business world. People are not that emotionally different from horses. Human or Horse, they
are looking for a leader in their life.
In 1975 I attended Katharine Gibbs School in New York. I have an expensive hobby and I needed to gain some additional skills to support
my Equine addiction.
In 1977 I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and lived in Marin County. For many years I worked in the "Corporate World" as an Executive Administrative Assistant. I found the best man
in the world, my soul-mate and that does not happen very often! We were married in 1984. Our son was born in 1986.
John has been involved in the swimming pool industry for many years. His proven sales records speak for themselves. However working hard and only getting a small
piece in of a big pie was not rewarding for me. My dreams were fading and we were settling for the status quo.
My employers often commented on my strong work ethic. However, those comments often made me question: Why am I working so hard on
something I don’t own? As time passed, the lack of creative freedom, fixed income and two week vacations became too stifling.
I also wanted more time with my beloved equine, Taylor. So in 2008 I started looking for something that would pay me what I am worth.
I was introduced to FHTM by a dear friend (Thank You Deann !) and have never looked back. I am dreaming again, and it's ALL good.
